The birds here sing when light touches them.
In the courtyard I think of the dealer
whose clients are all dead, his voice
so lonely only the rain will help. Recently,
the pictures in the locked ward seem
to back away from me, as if they know
youâre there too. And just today
I saw, in one of the ever-recurring
paintings of saints that line the long
halls, the uncertain light that filled
all those childhood afternoons and evenings
when we were so afraid.
